Dawn Kelly

A Second Act, Close to Home

After a corporate career ended, Dawn Kelly built a food business with her children—and made room for the next generation in Queens.

Dawn Kelly’s second career began in the neighborhood her family had called home for generations. In September 2017, she opened The Nourish Spot in Jamaica, Queens, alongside her children, Owen and Jade. The business put fresh juices, smoothies and customizable food on the menu. It also gave a family a way to build something together.

Two years earlier, Kelly’s nearly sixteen-year communications career at Prudential had ended with the elimination of her role. The departure unsettled a life she had expected to carry into retirement. Opening a neighborhood business would bring her into a different kind of working day, with family decisions and customer relationships much closer together.

At 52, she had to learn the mechanics of ownership. In her Side Hustle Pro interview, Kelly recalled paying $100 for an eight-week business class through the Queens Economic Development Corporation. Part of the assignment was going outside and asking potential customers what they wanted—and whether they would pay $5 for a smoothie. She relied on savings and severance as the idea moved toward opening.

That small financial detail makes the beginning tangible. A course fee, a customer conversation and money set aside from an earlier career were practical steps toward a new livelihood. The question was whether people nearby would buy what she wanted to sell.

Family became part of the operating structure. Jade, a trained chef and the business’s chief operating officer in Kelly’s Queens Community House profile, helped establish a relationship with the nonprofit in 2017. The shop became a place for young people to learn culinary and hospitality skills through internships. Kelly connected that work to her own experience of receiving guidance, and to her wish to pass it on.

Her sense of responsibility has deeper roots. In a 2024 Entrepreneur interview, Kelly traced her determination to her mother and grandfather, a veteran who settled in Jamaica after encountering housing discrimination elsewhere. Building in Queens gave the family history a commercial expression: a local enterprise serving people in the place that had shaped her.

The corporate years remained useful. Kelly’s ability to tell a story, cultivate contacts and ask for an opportunity helped take the business beyond its counter. By her 2023 podcast interview, she was describing vending at the US Open and Citi Field, as well as catering. She also named prayer as a daily constant.

Those details bring her working life into focus: family at the center, a neighborhood customer base, and relationships that can open a much larger venue. Expansion matters, but so does the route into it. Kelly’s experience gives a familiar idea—starting again—a specific address and a set of ordinary, repeatable actions.

Kelly set out to build generational wealth with her children. Teaching them the business was part of that ambition.
